Sunday, 5 April: Syllabus update to course schedule of lessons and points distribution – HWE3 Due 8 May; cancellation of TEE

Our next synchronous meeting as a class is now moved to LESSON 25 (8/9 April). I look forward to seeing all of your shiny, happy faces! You will also be pleased to note a kinder, gentler schedule of lessons to include a much later HWE3 due date (8 May), no TEE, and another redistribution of points. Please continue to stay on track with you truly awesome presentations and discussion questions IAW the schedule posted last week.

We will be going over some significant changes to the class, so make sure you attend the next group Blackboard Collaborate Ultra meeting you’ll be receiving a link and reminder for. See RE-REVISED Syllabus.  Aside from that, stay safe and stay at home–this will pass and you’ll be back on track soon enough. See you soon!

Sunday, 29 March: Clarification of presentation assignment and schedule (with due dates); new discussion post

I hope everyone is making the best of the extended time away from the Academy. I assure you we are working hard to come up with a viable plan to bring you back. As one of the lead planners, I apologize that this has taken me away from my real job as an English teacher, but I have been keeping tabs and enjoying your presentations and discussion posts. I thought it would be helpful to clarify some recent confusion regarding these participation-based assignments to make sure everyone is tracking. My goal is to ensure you get a collaborative experience without impinging upon what I am sure must be a busy schedule for you — perhaps even more busy than if you were here, due to the illusion that you are available to your friends and families in this distance learning environment.

However, this has been done before, and can be a very enriching experience. It will rely on how much you put into it. Until we are caught up on the presentation timeline by lesson 24, I will extend due dates through the lesson after they would have been taught, and the responses to the discussion post for the entire class through the NEXT lesson after that. For example, Twain presentations (and associated discussion question suggestion) were due NLT tomorrow (30 March), but the responses to the Twain discussion post will not be due until  lesson 23 (2/3 April).  To be clear, please refer to this precise schedule of presentations and due dates:

EN102 Presentation Guidelines (and Schedule)

Please email me if you have questions or concerns about the assignment, but do make sure you complete your presentation on time – your colleagues are depending on it.

I look forward to our next online meeting on lesson 24! Not to get all Orwellian on you, but make sure you are decent – I may ask you to turn your camera on, 1984 style…

Tues, 4 Feb 2020: Syllabus Change & Essay 1 Due Date

Due to unforeseen circumstances we will have to drop our next lesson (lesson 9 – 5/6 Feb). One silver lining, however, is that you will have an extra day to work on Essay 1, as it is now due (electronically) on Friday (7 Feb) NLT the stroke of midnight on Blackboard. You will bring your hard copy with SIGNED cover sheet and annotated poem to class lesson 10 (10/11 Feb).

In the meantime, please check out the new Shakespeare reading assignment and corresponding discussion question.

*Don’t forget to read Richard III Acts 1 & 2 before we meet for class Monday/Tuesday!

Wed, 29 Jan 2020: Lesson 7 (30/31 Jan) is Not a Class Drop

…HOWEVER, we will NOT meet as a group in the classroom; instead, during your normally scheduled class time, click on the “Discussion Post” tab and respond to the special 4-part (worth 20-points) Kevin Young independent study assignment.

Wed, 9 Jan 2020: Welcome to EN102!

I am LTC Charles Markley, instructor of literature (pronounced “lit-ra-tyah”) and official course theme guide for a deep inquiry into representation(s) of (and to) the world as we perceive (or convey) it. This site will serve as a space for course updates, major assignments, discussion topics, supplemental materials, and most importantly, the syllabus. Refer to this site frequently–at least daily–to keep abreast of classroom requirements. You will need to create an account by first clicking the “Discussion Post” tab above and respond to the first posting. Congratulations! You are now a full-fledged member of a very exclusive, surreptitious, high-minded (and thus also browed) society. To help celebrate, you will receive five (5) points just for accomplishing this task–effectively giving you an A+ in the course. Great job so far!
